Preposition (Parts of Speech)
Preposition
A word or a group of words placed before noun to show its position, relation and time, is called Preposition.
As:-
My book is on the table. (In this sentence, on says the relation between book and table, so on is preposition)
According to function, there are three kinds of preposition.
1)Preposition of Direction
2)Preposition of Place
3)Preposition of Time
According to construction, there are six kinds of Preposition.
1)Simple Preposition
2)Double Preposition
3)Compound Preposition
4)Participle Preposition
5)Phrasal Preposition
6)Disguised Preposition
Use of Prepositions:-
On: It is used when speaking of things at rest and in the sense of touch.
As:- A cap is on the table.
A boy is on the bench.
Above:- It is also used in the same way but which can be touched according to wish of the subject.
As:- That fan is above your head.
This wire is above my head.
Over:- It is also used in the same way but that can not be touched according to wish of the subject.
As:- There is a bird over your head.
The Moon is over our head.
In:- It is used for a thing but that must be in the rest.
As:- It's in your room.
You are in poverty.
Into:- It is also used in the same form but subject must be in motion.
As:- She is going into the room.
You are jumping into the lake.
At:- It is used for a small place or for a topic in a sentence.
As:- Raman lives at Kiratpur.
You live at home.
She is good at Mathematics.
Between:- It is used in the sense of middle of two things, places and persons in a sentence.
As:- Raman is between America and Iran.
You are between India and Pakistan.
Among:- It is also used in the same way for more than two countable nouns in a sentence.
As:- Raman is lecturing among the students.
Radha is dancing among the people.
Amidst:- It is also used in the same sense but with uncountable nouns in a sentence.
As:- Raman lost his pen amidst the water.
You are flying amidst the sky.
With:- It is used in a sentence in the sense of connection.
As:- You are going with Raman.
She is there with Amar.
From:- It is used in the sense of separation in a sentence.
As:- You come from Patna.
She is belonging from middle class family.
By:- It is used with the sources of traveling or for indirect sense in a sentence.
As: Raman goes to America by plane.
This tiger was killed by Raman.
Through:- It is also used in the same way but to show the medium.
As:- You are going through NH 57.
Raju went there through forest.
Off:- It is used in the sense of Apart From or in the sense of separation.
As:- You are going off the subject matter.
She is eating off the plate.
Towards:- It is mostly used in the sense of direction in a sentence.
As:- You don't go towards the river.
They are going towards Patna.
Besides:- It is used in a sentence in the sense of exception.
As: You are driving besides the main road.
She is beating besides her friends.
Beside:- It is used in a sentence for nearness of anything.
As:- My school is beside the post office.
Your husband is beside Ram.
Ago:- It is used to denote the past time in a sentence.
As:-Raman came ten days ago.
You reached there five years ago.
